What is diamond art?
Diamond art (also called diamond painting) is a craft where you place tiny faceted resin gems — called drills or diamonds — onto a colour-coded adhesive canvas. Each symbol on the canvas matches a diamond colour, so you build the image square by square, a little like a mosaic. The finished piece catches the light beautifully, which is where the "5D" name comes from: the multi-faceted gems sparkle from every angle.
What comes in a diamond art kit?

Full drill or partial drill?
Full drill kits cover the whole canvas in diamonds for maximum sparkle — the classic choice for wall art. Partial drill kits add diamonds to selected areas of a printed design, which makes them much quicker to finish. How to do diamond art: step by step
- Set up your space. Good light and a flat surface matter more than anything. Peel back only a small section of the protective film at a time so the canvas stays sticky.
- Pour one colour into the tray. Give it a gentle shake so the diamonds settle flat side down.
- Load the pen. Press the tip into the wax pad, then touch it to the top of a diamond — it will pick it up instantly.
- Place the diamond on its matching symbol and press gently. Repeat. That's genuinely the whole technique.
- Work in sections, one colour at a time, from the bottom of the canvas up so you don't lean on finished areas.
- Finish and seal. When complete, lay the protective film back over the canvas and press it down with a rolling pin so every diamond is firmly seated. You can then frame it, or seal it with a brush-on sealer for extra durability.
Choosing your first kit
Pick a design you'll enjoy looking at — but be a little strategic about size. A 30 x 30cm or 30 x 40cm canvas takes around 10–15 relaxing hours and is the sweet spot for beginners. Very small canvases can make detailed images look blocky, while very large ones are better saved for your second or third project. Fun formats like glow in the dark kits and hanging decorations make great gifts too.
