Diamond painting and paint by numbers are the two crafts people reach for when they want something relaxing that ends with real art on the wall. They share the same idea — follow a coded canvas, no artistic skill needed — but the experience is quite different. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose.
How each craft works
Diamond painting involves placing tiny faceted resin gems onto a sticky, colour-coded canvas with an applicator pen. The image builds up like a sparkling mosaic. Paint by numbers gives you a pre-printed canvas divided into numbered sections, each matching a pot of acrylic paint — you fill in the sections with a brush until the painting emerges.
Difficulty and skill
Both are genuinely beginner-friendly, but diamond painting is the more foolproof of the two. Placing a diamond is the same simple action every time, and mistakes lift off with tweezers. Paint by numbers asks a little more of you: brush control, letting sections dry, and painting neat edges on small areas. If you want to switch off completely, choose diamond painting. If you'd like to feel you're learning a skill, paint by numbers gently teaches brushwork and colour handling.
Time and mess
Paint by numbers involves wet paint, brush washing and drying time — it needs a corner where a canvas can sit undisturbed. Diamond painting is completely dry and tidies away in seconds, which makes it better for sofa crafting and for dipping in and out in short sessions. Time to finish is similar for equivalent sizes: roughly 10–20 hours for a typical 30 x 40cm canvas in either craft.
The finished result
This is the biggest difference. A finished paint by numbers looks like a painting — matte, classic, and surprisingly convincing from a couple of steps back. A finished diamond painting sparkles: the faceted gems catch light from every angle, which photographs beautifully and draws the eye in a way flat art doesn't. Sparkle or brushstrokes is really a taste question.
